Details

Attempted to use the standard parameters to boot into a Dell Latitude D600 laptop, usually works well with Linux software. Booted fine, entered the GUI fine, but no response at all from the mouse to select anything, therefore unable to use it. Stock Dell Latitude D600 laptop.

Please run:

find /dev/input/by-id/ -name "*event-mouse"

Do you get more than one device in return? Since you have a mouse stick (at least that's what I read about the D600) you might.
